Until 8 July: treatments take place at our trusted location — Statenlaan 92, The Hague (practice of Ralph The). From 8 July we welcome you at Anna Paulownastraat 113.

The treatment process

An orthodontic treatment follows clear steps. We guide you through every phase.

  1. 01

    First consultation

Getting to know you and an initial assessment of the teeth. Takes about 45 minutes.

  2. 02

    Diagnostic records

X-rays, 3D scan and photos for an accurate treatment plan.

  3. 03

    Treatment plan discussion

We present the options, duration and costs. You decide in your own time.

  4. 04

    Fitting the appliance

Placement of the brace. Thorough instructions for care and wear.

  1. 05

    Check-ups

Regular visits every 6 to 10 weeks to check progress and adjust.

  2. 06

    Removing the appliance

Removing the brace and making retainers.

  3. 07

    Retention check-ups

Annual check-ups for at least 2 years to ensure the result is stable.

Each step explained

1. First consultation
During the first consultation we assess the position of the teeth and jaws, take a brief medical history and explain what we see. There is no referral needed. You will receive our findings the same day and we discuss possible treatment options together. No commitments at this stage.
2. Diagnostic records
If treatment is indicated, we take diagnostic records: digital X-rays (low radiation), a 3D scan with the iTero scanner (no impression trays) and clinical photos. These are used to make a detailed treatment plan tailored to your child's specific situation.
3. Treatment plan discussion
During a separate appointment we present the treatment plan: which appliance(s), expected duration, number of visits and total cost. We explain everything clearly and answer all your questions. You are under no obligation and can take time to think it over.
4. Fitting the appliance
Once you choose to proceed, we schedule a fitting appointment. We place the appliance and explain in detail how to care for it. For fixed braces this takes about an hour. For removable appliances it is shorter. Your child will receive written care instructions to take home.
5. Check-ups
During the treatment phase your child comes in every 6 to 10 weeks. We check progress, adjust wires or components and answer any questions. The appointments are usually short (15–30 minutes). We work by appointment only — there is rarely a wait.
6. Removing the appliance
When the teeth are in the correct position, we remove the brace and make retainers. For fixed braces this is a comfortable procedure. The retainers are fitted the same day or within a week. You leave the practice with a straight smile and a clear plan for the retention phase.
7. Retention check-ups
Retention is essential: teeth naturally want to drift back. Your child wears retainers (fixed or removable) and comes in for annual retention check-ups for at least 2 years. We monitor whether everything is stable and whether any action is needed.

How long does it take?

The average treatment duration is 18 to 24 months. This is a guideline, not a guarantee. The actual duration depends on the severity of the irregularity, the type of appliance and your child's cooperation.

After removing the brace, there is always a retention phase of at least 2 years. During this phase your child wears a retainer to prevent the teeth from shifting back.

Total care at Orthodontic Practice AP therefore typically spans 4 to 6 years, from the first consultation to the completion of retention check-ups.
